In the 1950s, the United States was just beginning to broach the science of using satellites, but it may surprise you to know that it was not the United States who launched the first man made satellite into Earth&#8217;s orbit &#8211; it was Russia.</p>
<p>As the Russian R-7 rocket lifted Sputnik-1 into the air, the space races began. Satellites were launched between both nations and as their race took on new life and energy, new companies took an interest. In 1960, AT&#038;T declared their intentions to launch their own communication satellites and by 1964, six communication satellites were in orbit around the Earth, but it didn&#8217;t stop there. As the internet continued to improve with the technology, ways to transmit data wirelessly were also being researched and in 1973, two European computers were linked to an American network through satellite relay.</p>
<p>By 1996, the first satellite internet service was put through its paces and consumers in remote locations who could not afford the long distance charges were able to use DirecPC, which would later be known as HughesNet. This would set the precedent for satellite internet and the way we know it today.</p>

But all of that changed with the invention of the satellite.</p>
<p>Satellite technology is so ingrained with our modern society that most of the time, we don&#8217;t even notice it or think about how it impacts<span id="more-7"></span> our daily lives. The uses are so numerous and encompassing, that when we start to list them all and think about life without them, we can truly see how much this technology has changed the way we live and work. Whenever you use an ATM machine or make a call from your mobile phone, check email through a WIFI connection or plug in a GPS unit into your car to get directions, satellite technology is making it possible. From a huge corporate office in a large, thriving city down to a small town school, satellites play a huge part in how things run and how we interact with our world.</p>

Fixed satellites are frequently used for television broadcasting, in schools for distance learning programs and cable network providers, while mobile satellites are used for such communication technology as GPS (Global Positioning System) online radio stations and broadcasting news, television and other services in planes and automobiles. </p>
<p>There are several sub-branches and other types of satellite technology used as well for everything having to do with broadcasting the weather to watching a telecommunications conference projected from miles away on a laptop.
